Distirct Acceptable Use Form

On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, district staff sent an email out to everyone requesting that employees sign the updated acceptable use policy for websites and technology.  Please know that this is a negotiateable item and that the distirct cannot unilateraly change the conditions of employment without first going through negotiations.  There is no need to sign the form as of now until the matter is resolved between the district and GFCCE.

Election Results for March 23

Thank you to all of those who took the time to cast a vote in the March 23 GFCCE election.  Voter turnout was very good for this ballot measure as sixty-five (65) individuals voted. Here are the results for the GFCCE election on March 23:

  • President:  Alex Bauer with 58 votes in favor
  • Secretary:  Paula Bauer with 58 votes in favor
  • Cope Bylaws:  57 Yes votes; 6 no votes

(The totals above do not total 65 votes because several ballots left some of the voting options blank.)

Health Care Reform S.88 was passed out of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee. Originally, S.88 was a bill that laid out a plan for a single payer system. The bill, as passed out of committee, is essentially a summer study bill that will produce 3 options for health care reform, which will be developed by an expert. The bill calls for a 5-person board who would choose, and work with, the expert who would develop the options - 1 appointed by tthe Speaker, 1 appointed by the President Pro Tem, 2 appointed by the Governor, and 1 appointed by the other 4 board members. The composition of this board is of great concern to the advocates, as it is heavily weighted towards the Governor, who has not been a supporter of true health care reform. The bill is currently in the Senate Appropriations committee (as there is an appropriation required). Politics are running rampant, given that 3 of the gubernatorial candidates are senators - they are all jockeying for position on this bill.

Examples of How Merit Pay is Treated in Collective Bargaining Agreements

Many Collective Bargaining Contracts preserve merit pay as was documented in the book Managed Professionals; Unionized Faculty and Restructuring Academic Labor by AAUP General Secretary Gary Rhoades. In this article by Craig Flanery, AAUP Senior Program Officer, examples of how merit pay is treated in several contracts are given. The institutions cited have AAUP or AAUP/AFT as their Collective Bargaining (CB) agents. Flanery also includes language in the contracts about sharing salary information for salary studies.

GFCCE Needs Your Vote

On March 23 the GFCCE will hold an election to, among other things, decide whether to adopt the new political action committee (GCOPE).  I am asking for your "yes" vote on this matter.  The members of the GFCCE have been an under-utilized resource in determining the outcome of local school board elections.  We hope to change that by endorsing qualified candidates.  If you click on the title of this post you will see my letter to the membership that is being place in mailboxes this week.  I hope to see you at the polls next week and I urge your yes vote.
