Working People's Rally

On Monday, February 26th, across the nation, union workers answered the call to defend our voice in the workplace.  This was in response to the national attack against organized labor in the form of the Janus v AFSCME case.  The Janus case is a direct attack on state and municipal unionized workers.  The case was argued before the United States Supreme Court on Monday.  That same day, several rallies were held in Connecticut, including a rally at the foot of the steps of the Connecticut Supreme Court.  The ruling, expected in the coming months, will likely have a big imp

President's Message

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Solidarity,

We are looking forward to 2020 as an exciting year where we will be advancing the cause of adjuncts here at Montclair.

First, the adjunct contract was ratified by a 99% vote in favor. The contract can be seen on the Council of New Jersey State College Locals webpage at  www.cnjscl.org  Thank you all for voting.

Second, recently we were awarded a grant from AFTNJ for a student intern who would be a liaison between the union locals and student body.  We are sharing this intern with Local 1904.  The role of this intern is to:

  • Generate student involvement in union sponsored events such as solidarity walks or rallies.
  • Generate union involvement in student sponsored events such as voter registration and other civic engagement events.
  • Develop a student team to assist training of potential future interns.
  • Develop relationships with student government.
  • Enlist the assistance of the campus newspaper, The Montclarion.
  • Assist in weekly pop-up information tables around campus that enhance  student engagement  and member engagement.
  • Distribute Union communication/announcements to campus newspapers and other publications and directly to membership.
  • Assist with social media  campaigns.

We are very excited to be working with our sister union of full time professors, Local 1904. Our intern has already met with us, introduced us to a second assistant intern, and begun his outreach to the student body.

Third, we are excited that our state legislature has passed an Adjunct Bill of Rights emphasizing such important issues as equal pay for equal work, respect as professionals, voluntary inclusion in shared governance with voting rights, participation in professional development opportunities, the ability to attend conferences without financial penalty or risk to future employment , auditing classes without tuition or fee charges (given available class space), and access to unemployment benefits.  This provides our local with the road map for what we hope to achieve over the next few years.

Have a wonderful semester! And remember: Local 6025 we’ve got your backs!

In solidarity,

Mary Monahan Wallace, President

A Civil Right to Unionize

By Richard Kahlenberg and Moshe Marvit

The New York Times Opinion
Feb. 29, 2012

From the 1940s to the 1970s, organized labor helped build a middle-class democracy in the United States. The postwar period was as successful as it was because of unions, which helped enact progressive social legislation from the Civil Rights Act to Medicare. Since then, union representation of American workers has fallen, in tandem with the percentage of income going to the middle class. Broadly shared prosperity has been replaced by winner-take-all plutocracy. MORE

2 Healthcare Items

With many thanks to our friends at the Comptroller's Office, we have some corrections/clarifications to the Health Plan changes.  In an effort to keep healthcare costs down, there are two added components to the State Employee Healthcare Plan: SmartShopper and Site Of Service.  Here is an update for both:

WORKING PEOPLE'S RALLIES ACROSS THE STATE

A message from CT AFL CIO President Lori Pelletier:

The Supreme Court will soon hear a case that will have a big impact on our voice at work. That’s why working people across the country are making a clear stand to keep the freedoms that we’ve fought for.

On Monday, Feb. 26, there will be a day of action, with local events happening coast to coast, to defend our voice on the job and demand an end to an economy designed to favor the rich and powerful on the backs of working families.
